3 Important Things To Do Before Buying A Used Semi Truck

Automotive Blog

So, you're in the market to buy a used semi truck, but you're looking to save some money. As such, you'd prefer to buy a used semi truck as opposed to purchasing a brand new one off the lot. At the same time, you're a little nervous because you want to make sure the truck you end up with is reliable. This is where taking the time to ask the right questions and carefully inspect a used semi before buying can make all the difference.

Consider Axle Configuration

Start by considering the axle configuration of the truck and whether or not it'll be suitable for your specific needs. Some common axle configurations that you may want to consider include 4x2, 4x4, and 6x4, just to name a few. When determining which configuration is best for your hauling needs, be sure to consider the type of materials you'll be handling, the weight of these materials, and the terrain over while you'll be traveling. Furthermore, understand that there may be specific axle regulations you need to follow, so be sure to keep these in mind, especially if you're shopping for used semis in another state.

Check the Oil

Of course you want to buy a used semi truck that's been well taken care of. A good way to get a feel for how the truck's engine has been taken care of in the past is to pop the hood and check the oil yourself. If the oil is thick and dirty, then this is a sign that the truck hasn't been taken care of very well. After all, regular oil changes are about the most basic preventative maintenance task that can be done on a semi; if the previous owner hasn't even kept up with oil changes, there's a good chance the rest of the truck hasn't been well cared for, either.

Research Replacement Parts

Finally, don't make the mistake of buying a used semi that it's difficult to find replacement parts for. You'd be surprised at how many truck buyers overlook this detail. After all, you're more than likely going to need to purchase a replacement part for your truck at some point, and the last thing you want is to find that you have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on these parts because they're rare or you need to order them from some overseas seller or truck parts manufacturer.
